New Year

The so-called “Carol of the Bells” is actually a traditional Ukrainian New Year song.

There are many arrangements, but here’s one with a nice Ukrainian folk picture!

Hot Afternoon in Canberra

It’s so bright out here, I can’t see what I’m taking a picture of!

The heat is well and truly back in force in Canberra today, after a few days of nice, manageable summer weather. Inland heat is a totally different beast to the heat you get on the coast. Maybe I shouldn’t be working outside!

World Flags

Next to the lake in Canberra there’s an area where the flags of every country in the world are displayed in alphabetical order (this is one half; the first half is on the other side of the building). This is the end of the alphabet. A dreadful picture taken yesterday afternoon. The United States is doing a good job, but Uganda and Ukraine are shy and flopping against their posts…

Public Holiday in Canberra

After a late lunch at award-winning Monster in Hotel Hotel in Canberra this afternoon, we stopped by the lake on the way home. Here is the National Carillon, a gift from the Queen a few decades ago.

Bird + Ballet

This blog is in danger of becoming all about birds, but they’re endlessly entertaining!

This is one of our regular magpies, and in the days before Christmas she discovered she loves the ballet score for The Nutcracker. She came to our door every afternoon and stood right there to listen.

However, on Christmas Eve, she listened like this. We couldn’t stop laughing, but she stayed as she was!
