Happy Easter!

Being Ukrainian Catholic, we don’t have our proper Easter until the first of May this year, but here are some pysanky – hand-painted Ukrainian Easter eggs.

It’s Ukrainian Easter this weekend!

You have permission to eat more Easter eggs…

Ukrainian Easter

I’ve done this before, but I’ll do it again! Ukrainian Easter (no matter whether you’re Orthodox OR Catholic – like me!) is the week after the Easter you’re thinking of.

But anyway… Ukraine totally owns Easter. They have the most extraordinary hand-painted eggs. After hours of painting with beeswax and dyeing different colours, you then risk shattering the whole thing when you make pin holes in both ends of the eggshell and then blow the contents out.

Over the years I’ve seen some gorgeous eggs ruined at the last moment.

Preparing for Ukrainian Easter

A few photographs from Saturday. Some of our own (slightly faded now they’re decades old!) pysanky – hand-painted Ukrainian Easter eggs. A few of them (the messy ones at the back!) were made by us when we were about six. Then there’s the traditional embroidery, and underneath that the weaving done by my great-grandmother in rural Ukraine a long, long time ago. It was given to us in 2011 when we finally tracked down our family in that village, after believing there was nobody left on my grandfather’s side of the family, thanks to war and the Russians. They’d been saving it for a few decades, hoping one day we might find them there.

And making the paska – the Ukrainian Easter bread. Baba, on the left, is ninety-one and still doing all the traditional things each Easter and Christmas.

Ukrainian Easter

Ukraine does Easter better than anyone (no, I’m not biased!). It’s not much of a deal in most countries anymore, but the intricate designs and all the traditions are important in Ukraine. This year is an unusual year because all the Easters fall on the same day – no matter which calendar a country follows.

Here are some of the many, many Ukrainian Easter eggs (pysanky) for sale on Etsy at the moment.

Ukrainian colours for Easter

As Russia becomes crazier and crazier and invades and takes over more and more of Ukraine, we figured regular old Ukrainian customs weren’t enough this Easter. So we have these crazy guys to put on the table (sort of ruins the classy look we were going for!) – in the national colours of Ukraine.
