What a difference a few hours make.

Photographs from the same spot in Canberra – a few hours apart. The picture HERE is of a waterbomber trying to stop the fires before they hit us. About three hours later, and the fire is here …

DC-10 Water Tanker

The DC-10 – a firefighting water tanker from Alabama, USA – has been flying over my house, to and from the bushfires, for days. I finally got a shot of it just before three this afternoon.

The Smoke is Back in Canberra

After the horror fires that hit the Canberra region a couple of days ago (and are still burning), the awful muddy yellow smoke has again taken over Australia’s capital city.

Here are some pictures from around 5pm today. The first is an aeroplane flying over our house – on its way back from the nearby fire front. The second is a currawong in a tree in our garden.

Another Creepy Canberra Sunset

The sky has again turned a disturbing shade of pink because of the bushfires surrounding Canberra at the moment.

More Smoke in Canberra

Yesterday Canberra had its hottest day on record. And now, mid-morning, the bushfire smoke is worse than it has been since the 2003 firestorm.

Oh, Victoria …

I spent the days before Christmas, and up until the end of the year, in Smoko, near Bright in the Victorian Alps. We were half-joking that we’d better be ready to go in case there was a bushfire, but now it’s at “too late to leave” level.

I’m horrified. Here’s a shot from the day I arrived at the property just over a week ago, and then there is tiny, one-street Smoko is on the national news:
