R.I.P. Denis Ten

2017 Shanghai Trophy

Horrifying news from Kazakhstan that ground-breaking figure skater Denis Ten, a world silver medallist and Olympic bronze medallist (both firsts for his country) has been murdered by two men trying to steal his car’s mirrors.

Ten was only twenty-five, and competed at the Pyeongchang Games this year.

A Reminder

Sonya's Stuff

Over the days of the World Cup Semi-Finals, please remember that nobody should be enjoying soccer on Russian soil while the country is actively invading Ukraine, killing thousands of their neighbours, committing war crimes in Syria, assassinating political dissidents, torturing teenagers to death, committing ethnic cleansing in Crimea, shooting down airliners, illegally occupying parts of Georgia, illegally occupying parts of Moldova, committing war crimes in Ukraine, persecuting Catholics and Muslims and Jews, and actively trying to destroy Western democracies.

Boycott World Cup 2018

I hope many people will develop a conscience and join in the boycott of the World Cup in Russia that begins today. Who cares about men chasing a ball when it’s happening in Putin’s brutal, corrupt dictatorship?

I’m not sure how many war crimes in Ukraine and Syria, how many invasions and annexations, or how many assassinations it will take for the world to prioritise humanity over soccer, but we’re not there yet.

Formula One (finally!) gets rid of “grid girls”

Formula One Race Podium Melbourne Australia Sonya Oksana Heaney 20th March 2016 Lewis Hamilton Nico Rosberg Sebastian Vettel F1

Formula One has just announced they won’t be using so-called “grid girls” anymore, and all I can think is: about bloody time.

These young women are employed to wear skimpy clothes and parade around with signs and such at the races, and then get doused in champagne on the podium at the end.

As the (male) BBC journalist put it:

‘Society is living through a defining moment in sexual politics. It is the time of #MeToo, and revelations of sexual harassment and worse by powerful men.

Some will see this decision as tokenistic and unnecessary. But the likelihood is that the vast majority of those people will be men.

In that context, it feels like an appropriate decision for the times, and one that F1 had to make.’

I have attended countless Formula One races – my father used to be heavily involved in motorsport – and I sat in some expensive seats.

And, you know what? The men around me, who were willing to fork out thousands of dollars to attend the races – men with a bit of grey at the temples and with children under ten beside them, and fully grey men with their wives in the next seat – turned into animals when the young women were paraded out onto the track.

Every time I sat in those stands, surrounded by reasonably affluent, allegedly classy men, I felt sick. They’d break out into wolf whistles and lewd comments and just generally be repulsive. It didn’t matter they had daughters and wives with them.

Good riddance to this horrendous practice.

These days Formula One has female team managers, and female drivers are making inroads (actually, the first female drivers were generations ago).

This is also the case with MotoGP, which is essentially the motorbike version of Formula One. Over there they have teenage girls riding, and yet they still parade the grid girls around the track. And, over in MotoGP, some of the young women are essentially dressed in fetish wear!

I know many men are going to be very upset about this. But, guess what? They’ll get used to it.

RIP to Luis Salom, the rising Spanish motorbike racing star who was killed in a freak accident in Spain today. I have been following his MotoGP career for years, and the news this afternoon was a shock.

Formula One in Melbourne

Just a shot of the Formula One podium this evening (taken from where we sat). It was quite the crazy race, and because of where we sit – on the start/finish line and facing pit lane – we got to see a lot of it (like the Ferrari on fire!), but I’ll go through my pictures when I get home.

Fernando Alonso’s crash was terrifying – how did he survive that?!
